IU Transportation Demand Management (TDM) encourages students, staff, faculty, and visitors to bicycle to, from, and within Indiana University Bloomington's campus by providing end of trips facilities like bicycle racks and bicycle lockers; developing plans for on- and off- street bicycle facilities; offering bicycle education classes; coordinating large bicycle encouragement events; and providing bicycle related information on our website and printed materials. In 2017, IU Bloomington was designated a Silver Level Bicycle-Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists in recognition of its efforts to create a bicycle-friendly university.
Job Summary
IU Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is looking for a Bicycle Outreach Specialist. The position will work with the TDM Coordinator and Bicycle Manager to plan, market, manage, evaluate, and promote bicycling on campus. If you’re interested in a hands-on position that will get you out around campus for field work, and that also offers experience in marketing outreach, project management, and program evaluation, this is a position for you.
The Bicycle Outreach Specialist will help support IU Bloomington’s bicycle programs. Overall, this position is responsible for engaging IU students, faculty, and staff to encourage and enable them to utilize bicycling as a viable form of sustainable transportation.
General Responsibilities:
- Utilize on-the-ground outreach and in-office research to build support for new and improved bicycle programs and infrastructure
- Execute a bicycle marketing and outreach program
- Assist with Campus Bike’s Month planning, annual bike light giveaway, and other bicycle encouragement programs
- Use innovative communications strategies to ensure bicycle education messages reach students, faculty, and staff and are reinforced on an ongoing basis
- Explore opportunities for using the Little 500 race as an outreach channel for bicycle education and encouragement
- Proactively educate students on the benefits of bicycle use, need for quality bicycles, rules of the road, and other bicycle education topics
- Provide ideas and feedback based on interactions and communications with the IU student and faculty/staff community
- Other projects and tasks that improve bicycle access and mobility on campus
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University, making progress toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Experience with bicycle commuting and bicycling with traffic in Bloomington.
SKILLS
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to professionally interact with a diverse blend of personalities to maintain strong relationships.
- Enthusiasm for spreading bicycling awareness, environmental science, and sustainability.

Work Hours
This position begins in the fall semester of 2021 and requires 15 - 20 hours per week attendance with scheduling flexibility to accommodate academic/class priorities.
